I was a child in Oakland County in the 1970 s At the time of the murders I was just about five My childhood as everybodylse s childhood was altered For years after the fear was palpable I remember the orange hands in people s windows indicating the safe houses I could never venture from our yard Parents everywhere were in fear because the perp was never found I think this book was OUTSTANDING I will say that the writing was excellent at times and very poor at others It was not edited well Not sure I care too much about that I think there was some unnecessary as well as copious repetition in some areas but I am sure that was used as a tool to make sure readers were able to understand this spider web of facts I swear this book is probably correct in its sole sleuthing regarding this unsolved case It did a fantastic job of revealing what the authorities knew did not know or knew but wouldn t reveal or act on As a side item some FANTASTIC history in here that anybody living in the two county area would be fascinated with 332 While in serious need ofditing if you can look beyond that this is quite a mind blowing and intriguing look at the OCCK Oakland County Child Killer case with it s tentacles reaching from on high delving deep into the depraved darkness of a sick cultish underworld of a despicable fetish and business Not covered here but connections abound this case may be linked to Gacy and The Candyman Dean Corll see The Clown and the Candyman series and podcast and Quite the rabbit hole to slip down I must say That being said I really wish this and Appelman s book The Kill Jar Obsession Descent and a Hunt for Detroit s Most Notorious Serial Killer had indexes with which to reference though with there being so many names and connections that were new to me I d like to be able to map it all out Anyway this is definitely a compelling read and had me up way too late a few nights Seems to be told from the perspective of a fictional character but I presume it is a real person with an alias who had intimate connections to the case and through her research dug up much knowledge of the still unsolved case Although I m not sure if I agree with the author s character s conviction on who the culprit is although a fair case is certainly made there is still much worthwhile reading here for anyone interested in the case and especially the conspiracy cover up behind it as I am or true crime fans in general Part of the OCCK canon without a doubt I think Marney Rich Keenan s The Snow Killings Inside the Oakland County Child Killer Investigation is probably the most comprehensive on the topic which I am now listening to and reading although not much on the elusive Reverend Redmond whom I suspect may have a bigger role in this story Portraits in the Snow The Oakland County Child KillingsScandals and Small Conspiracies is recommended 332 Like a rotten onion peeled away from itself with seemingly no end to the many layers and stench was the tragic truth that four little ones and their torturous murders which set off a fire storm of fear that for a time crippled a community and forever devastated their families were in the landscape of the underbelly of humanity where kings thieves and killers dwelt simply small pebbles thrown into its cold murky waterscausing a difficult inconvenient ripplelost in the larger picture of hidden scandal and conspiracy where the many monsters and a killer would never have to pay the fiddler for their dance with the devil or feel the hard hand of justice Portraits in the Snow The Oakland County Child KillingsScandals and Small Conspiracies.
